- Isfahan, Iran- good precedent for tile work
- Mosaic- American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Md designed by Loring Cornish
- tile on a functional level, is used for its values as an easy to clean surface, hygenic, impervious surface (stain resistent) with the right glaze, and resilient.
- ceramic tiles is predominately clay
- very malleable but also very dense
- porcelain- very durable even w/o a glaze, stain resistant, nonporous, matte finish is desirable; also use glazes on it to mimic other finished (patina metal, stainless stain) because its cheaper
- terra cotta (italian origins meaning baked earth) -Louis Sullivan Wainwright Building in St. Louis 1890-91
- glazed tile- used in locations were cleaning is constant
- composite tile- terrazzo (most common type) shards of different stone and rock with a cement binding agent. Very cost effective especially in large spaces.
- Setting tile
- start with a level surface to apply the tile
