"Atmospheres"- Peter Zumthor

Key points and notes I took from the reading...
  • We percieve atmosphere through our emotional sensibility
    • We are capable of immediate appreciation, of a spontaneous emotional response, of rejecting things in a flash
  • Factors in creating Atmosphere:
    • The body of Architecture
      • it collects different things and materials and combines them to create a space
    • Material Compatibility
      • materials react w/ one another so that the material composition gives rise to something unique
    • Sound of the Space
      • sound of people walking through; of the quiet; its eb and flow
    • Temperature of a Space
      • materials can extract warmth from our bodies
      • temperature (to temper) searching for the right mood
    • Surrounding Objects
    • Between Composure & Seduction
      • movement (free or directed)
    • Tension between Interior & Exterior
    • Levels of Intimacy
    • The Light of Things
Questions I had:
  1. Which materials can make us warmer or cooler?
  2. How did he create (or how would one recreate) the atmosphere of "sauntering" or movement and flow in the Swiss Thermal Bath?
  3. If atmosphere is our emotional response and this can vary from person to person, how can you ensure someone doesn't experience the atmosphere differently than your intent?
