"The Plastics Age"- Penny Sparke

Key points and notes from the reading:

  • Post Modernism found value in all the things Modernism threw out (ex- minimalism)
  • Reincorporation of details and historical references
  • University of Houston School of Architecture (86') example of Post Modernism
    • references of temple/church and Palladio's work (Italian church)
  • Robert Venturi- most identifiable w/ the Post Modern movement
    • for a design to be interesting it needs complexity and contradiction, "less is a bore vs less is more"
  • Reading was a collection of essays; first 2 were analyzing plastic (neither for or against it)
  • There's a new way of looking at products around us, allow us to really appreciate plastic
    • a skin that defines the object and gives it value
  • authentic vs. manufactured products, the element of weathered and being worn in over time vs. worn out
